Joby Just Flew 3,199 Miles With Zero Hands on the Stick
A converted Cessna crossed the U.S. with no safety-pilot inputs — 3,199 miles, official. The real product isn't the air taxi — it's autonomy for freight, defense, and remote logistics.
Joby Aviation is famous for electric air taxis and the long grind of FAA certification. On September 18 it wanted you to notice something else: a converted Cessna Caravan that just finished a 3,199-mile U.S. crossing with zero control inputs from the onboard safety pilot.
So basically: the near-term autonomous aircraft product may not be a shiny eVTOL in a city skyline render. It may be a retrofit brain on a workhorse plane that already knows how to haul freight.
What the flight actually did
Joby’s own release is precise: the aircraft covered 3,199 miles with zero control inputs from the onboard safety pilot, including autonomous taxi, takeoff, cruise, and landing, supervised remotely from up to 2,323 miles away. A converted Cessna Caravan (Joby’s J208) did the eastbound Electric Skies tour leg from Concord, California to North Carolina’s Outer Banks near Kitty Hawk.
TechCrunch and Aviation Week round the number to ~3,100 in headlines. Use the company figure when you care: 3,199.
The route was not a video-game waypoint list. It included busy airspace near Phoenix Deer Valley, weather reroutes around thunderstorms, and demo stops including Fort Worth and Shaw Air Force Base. The eastbound leg ended with a ceremonial low pass near Kitty Hawk — marketing, sure, but also a flex about operating into smaller regional fields.
Joby’s autonomy stack leans on technology from its 2024 Xwing acquisition and more than 400 flights / 800 automated flight hours, per the company. Defense exercises have already used related capability for logistics speed.
Why this isn’t the eVTOL certification story
Certification still matters for passenger eVTOLs — noise, unit economics, regulators. This week’s news is a parallel business: put autonomy on conventional airframes first for cargo, medical logistics, disaster response, and defense. TechCrunch notes AFWERX contract support and a broader defense push, including the Resonant Sciences acquisition.
Passenger air taxis need cities to accept new vehicles. Autonomous Caravans need airports that already exist and missions that already pencil if you remove or remote the pilot.
What to watch
A safety pilot on board means this is not “nobody home.” Remote supervision means communications and contingency design are part of the product. The westbound return with more city stops will be another data point — or another press cycle. Either way, watch disclosed intervention rates, weather handling, and whether customers buy the retrofit story before the air taxi story.
The grounded take
Autonomous flight across a continent is a milestone. Turning it into a business means boring reliability on Tuesday night cargo runs, not only Outer Banks photo ops. If Joby’s second act is “software for planes we already trust,” that may ship useful work before urban eVTOL networks do — without pretending certification got easier.
So basically — pass it on.
